The tour starts at Brandenburg Gate where Nazi hordes marched with torches in January 1933 when Hitler seized power. One month later, the Reichstag building burned, and the Nazis used this as a pretext to abolish democracy. You will see the memorial to the murdered members of the parliament in front of the Reichstag building and other memorials to victims of Nazi crimes – among them the Holocaust Memorial stands out, an enormous field of concrete steles that you can walk through to get a sense of the helplessness and loneliness Jewish people felt when the perpetrators deprived them of their right to live.
Only a few meters away from the memorial is the former site of the bunker where Hitler committed suicide in 1945. Unassuming residential buildings occupy the place where his gigantic New Chancellery was opened in 1939, only to be destroyed by allied airplanes shortly thereafter. You will see remains of Goebbel´s Ministry of Propaganda and Goering´s former Ministry of Aviation – the building nowaday serves as Germany´s Ministry of Finance. The tour ends at the exhibition “Topography of Terror” where SS and Gestapo headquarters were located until 1945.
