The tour can be customized according to your individual needs. For booking please forward the name of the ship and time of arrival.
The ride in an air-conditioned minivan (for larger groups a coach will be deployed) from Warnemünde to Berlin takes about 2.5 hours. You will meet your English-speaking guide there, and he or she will show you the highlights of Berlin with an emphasis on Jewish life on an extensive 6 hours sightseeing tour. As the way back to the ship will take another 2.5 hours and you need to have some extra time in case of traffic congestions, please make sure to have at least 14 hours time between the ship´s arrival and departure.
You will also see the city´s major sights like Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag, Victory Column and Unter den Linden. Nevertheless, this tour focusses on the places and traces of Jewish life in Berlin in the past and present. For example, you will see both Jewish community centers of former West Berlin and East Berlin, the Jewish Museum with its permanent exhibition on 2,000 years of Jewish life in Germany, Berlin´s largest synagogues both before the war and in the present time, the city´s Jewish gymnasium and places where Jewish schools used to be before the war, and kosher cafes in the old Jewish Quarter. We will take you to the site of Berlin´s first synagogue that was built in 1714 and destroyed during World War II, and tell you the story of the peaceful resistance at Rosenstrasse where non-Jewish wives of Jewish prisoners prevented them from being deported in 1943. Visit the workshop of Otto Weidt who was hiding Jewish workers from Nazi persecution and has been officially recognized in Yad Vashem as a Righteous among the Nations. You will see the Holocaust Memorial, walk through the field of steles and have a chance to discuss the current state of German-Jewish relations with your guide. If requested, the sites of Hitler´s bunker and the SS and Gestapo headquarters can be visited.
The tour will include a lunch break and ample time for visiting one of Berlin´s museums (for example, the Jewish Museum) or going shopping, if you wish to do so.
