Visit the IGA – Berlin is green

Berlin has a lot to offer to Berliners and visitors alike – and this year there is an additional must-see. The IGA has opened two months ago and attracts nature loving visitors with a ropeway system, an observational platform, a floating platform, a flower hall and many other fascinating things to see and to do.

A green city
Even without the IGA, Berlin has the reputation of being an extraordinarily green city with a lot of parks and gardens within the city limits. One only has to think about the Tiergarten (a large park right in the city center), the Schlosspark Charlottenburg or one of the countless municipal parks inviting city dwellers to spend their leisure time in the summer in green areas. There are even forests like Grunewald and Koepenicker Forst as well as many lakes where it is possible to swim on a hot and sunny day. Next to Berlin there is the city of Potsdam with countless palaces and palace gardens, lakes and beautiful bicycle paths that make a Potsdam Bike Tour the ideal way to explore this former residential city of Prussian kings.

When Tempelhof airport was closed 9 years ago, it was thought to be the ideal location for an event like the International Horticultural Exhibition IGA. Nevertheless, Berliners again saw their chance to claim this territory for leisure activities and the vast space with former runways and grass lands was declared a public park. A new place for the IGA was chosen: The Kienbergpark in Marzahn, formerly known for the “Gardens of the World” with Chinese, Japanese, Balinese and other gardens, was expanded and now features an even greater abundance of gardens, flowers and landscapes.

Ropeway high up in the air
The most striking attractions of the IGA is a ropeway where visitors can float high up in the air. The ride can be repeated as many times as one wishes as this is included in the entrance fee (€ 20). Furthermore, an observational platform called “Wolkenhain” that has the shape of an illuminated cloud offers a view from Marzahn right to the city center (on sunny days). There is also a floating platform on a pond where discussions and events are held. As many visitors will come with children, there are several theme playgrounds referring to Erich Kaestner´s children book “35th of May or Konrad´s Ride to the South Seas”, and one of them is an aquatic playground that is ideal for children on hot summer days. If you want action, there is a summer bob track, so you can ride all the way down the hill at high speed!

Flowers and Gardens

Of course, the most important features of a horticultural exhibition are the flowers and the gardens. This year´s theme is “An ocean of colours”, and this can be noticed: Countless blossoming flowers greet the visitors in the flower hall, the tropical hall, the rose garden and many outdoor displays. There is a dahlia garden, a rhododendron grove, the “Märkischer Garten”, a local exhibition with plants from the area around Berlin, a tree exhibition and so much more! Find out more About the IGA, plan your visit and enjoy! Even after 15th of October, when the IGA will finally close, this territory remains a park and, for example, the cableway will still keep functioning. Berlin already features such a lasting reminder of an exhibition that took place more than 30 years ago: The Britzer Garten in the South of Neukoelln is a lovely park with an aquatic playground, a small park railway and all kinds of flowers blossoming every summer and spring.
